Introduction

Blind grading in AsULearn allows instructors to assess and grade assignment submissions without seeing the names of their students attached to each submission. Instead, randomly generated participant numbers are displayed while grading submissions. After grading, instructors can reveal student names and release their grades.

Student names on submitted work

This method does not guarantee that student names will be entirely hidden during grading, since students can include their names within the content of their submission. For example, a student might list their name at the start of an essay, as specified in MLA style guidelines. If you are using blind grading, direct your students to not include their names in their submissions.

Using Blind Grading

1. Open your course in AsULearn, then enable Edit mode.

2. Begin creating a new assignment OR edit an existing assignment that has no submissions.

3. In the Assignment settings under the "Grade" heading, from the Blind grading drop-down menu, select Yes.

This setting can be locked

This setting will be locked once a submission or grade has been made in relation to this assignment. You must enable this setting before students submit their work.

Accidental student names

This setting does not affect the content or titles of submissions, so you might see a student's name if they explicitly stated their name in the content of their submission or in the title of their upload.

 3. Grade each submission as you normally would.

During blind grading, students cannot see their own grades even after you have graded their submissions. You must first reveal student identities, showing you student names for submissions, in order to release grades to students. To reveal student identities:

1. Open the Assignment activity that is graded. The activity's Grading summary page will open.

2. Click the View all submissions button. The Submissions page will open, with randomly generated Participant Numbers instead of student names.

3. Open the Grading action dropdown menu or from the Assignment menu, select Reveal student identities
From grading actions menu select Reveal student identities

4. You will be prompted to confirm your choice. Click the Continue button to reveal student identities.

Confirm that you are sure your wish to reveal the student identities for this assignment

You cannot undo this step

After revealing students identities, you cannot go back to the blind grading mode for this assignment.

5. The Submissions page will load, with student names now listed by their submissions.
