Introduction

Course formats influence how your course content is displayed. For example, the Weekly format divides your course into weeks, while Topics format divides your course into topics. Regardless of which course format you use, these distinct areas of your course are called "Sections".

Duplicating a section can be helpful when building a course, especially if you're attempting to keep the structure of each section consistent throughout the semester, or design a template. This article covers how to duplicate individual sections. To bulk duplicate content within sections, see the article  Course: Bulk Editing Course Content instead.

The General section cannot be duplicated

The very first section in every course is called the "General" section, regardless of which course format you're using. The General section is unique and cannot be duplicated. As an alternative, use the Bulk Editing tool to duplicate the content within the section.

1. Turn editing on in your course.

2. Click the vertical ellipsis icon ( ⋮) across from the name of the section you're duplicating to open the Edit menu, then select "Duplicate".
