Note to Instructors

If you elect to require Respondus Lockdown Browser, or Respondus Lockdown Browser with Respondus Monitor on a given AsULearn quiz, it is important that you do not also require the use of "Safe Exam Browser" on the quiz's Edit Settings page. Problems result when both these security measures are combined.

LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that students download and use. It locks down the testing environment, while a student takes a quiz in AsULearn. During the exam the students are unable to copy or print the exam for other students, access other applications or visit other websites.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor builds on the power of LockDown Browser by using a student’s webcam to record video and audio of them while taking the exam. Using industry-leading video analytics, Monitor will flag any behaviors that may represent instances of cheating. Instructors can then view the recording and decide for themselves.

Please note: Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor does not work on most mobile devices. Use of Chromebooks is not advised. Please see system requirements on the product website for more info.

Troubleshooting Tips for Installing LockDown Browser

  • Directly log into a system as a local administrator with full rights. Do not use “Switch User” or a “Remote Access” connection.

  • Temporarily disable all security software.

  • Your device must meet minimum requirements

Windows: 11 and 10*
* Includes x86 32 and 64bit processors and ARM 64bit processors using x86 emulation.
* Windows 10/11 "S mode" is not a compatible operating system, nor can LockDown Browser be obtained via the Windows App Store. At present, support for Windows 10/11 "S Mode" isn’t on the roadmap for LockDown Browser.
* Windows 10/11 "SE" is currently not a compatible operating system for LockDown Browser.

Mac: macOS 10.13 to 13.0+.

Hard Disk Space

    • Windows: 200 MB of free hard disk space
    • Mac: 200 MB of free hard disk space

Recommendations

Have students take an ungraded practice quiz that requires the use of LockDown Browser, before the graded quiz occurs.

Leave the quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again, if they use a different computer.

Set Up Respondus in AsULearn (Moodle)

Requirements and Limitations:

  • The quiz must be in AsULearn.
  • Students must have a broadband internet connection.
  • Students must have a webcam to use Respondus Monitor, but not to use Respondus LockDown Browser.
  • Students must be able to download and install the Respondus LockDown Browser on their device. (This will happen the first time they open a Quiz with Respondus LockDown Browser enabled or they may download Respondus LockDown Browser using this preconfigured link.)
Students must use a Windows or Mac computer with a compatible operating system. iPads may be allowed by instructors.
  • Respondus LockDown Browser can only prevent the use of applications on the device where the student is taking the exam. Use of other devices is unaffected.
  • Not all screen readers are supported by Respondus LockDown Browser, but NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver are all supported.
  • Some limits on allowable materials cannot be enforced (e.g. # of pages of notes).
  • Although the audio and video from the webcam will be monitored, there are things the camera cannot see or hear.
  • Faculty are responsible for activating and configuring Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor in AsULearn.
  • Faculty are responsible for reviewing their own exam recordings and interpreting Review Priority values. IT cannot assist with interpreting Review Priority values or determining that an academic integrity violation has occurred.
  • Recordings are usually available 8 to 24 hours after the exam is finished.
  • Use of allowed materials (e.g. notes) may be flagged as anomalous student behavior if using Respondus Monitor.
