This guide will explain how to view and install updates on multiple Apple Mobile Device running iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc). ITS currently follows the model of supporting the latest released version of iOS and one version previous for security reasons. We recommend you regularly check if your device has any available updates and apply them as soon as possible.

The currently supported operating system versions are:

  • iOS 15
  • iOS 16

Important

If your device does not meet system requirements to upgrade to one of the supported versions, contact IT Support for further steps.

Apple Configurator is a tool from Apple that you can use to update or restore mobile devices en masse. You should only use this if you are managing groups of iPads for AppState. For more information, contact IT Support.

Important

While Apple Configurator can do many tasks, including enrolling devices in an MDM, installing apps, and managing settings, you will not be able to use these features because ITS already utilized an MDM provider for management of University-owned devices. Attempting to do anything besides updating or restoring the devices could damage the device.

Requirements:

  • You will need a Mac computer with Apple Configurator 2. Apple Configurator 2 can be installed from the App Store for free.
  • The devices will need to be physically connected via USB to the Mac. You can use a USB hub to connect multiple devices at once.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Attach your devices to the Mac running Apple Configurator.
  2. Wait for your devices to appear in the Apple Configurator window

    Note

You can view multiple devices at once much easier from the “List” view. This can be changed under the View drop-down.
