Summary

ITS provides Virtual Machine hosting and management for enterprise and non-enterprise services. VMware vSphere is the hosting platform used to provide these services. The VM hosting service provides high availability of VMs hosted in the service. Redundant high speed storage systems with automatic fail-over ensure underlying storage availability. The service is made up of multiple hosts that provide automatic restart of VMs in case of host failure. The network infrastructure supporting the VM hosting service is composed of redundant network switches, ensuring continuation of network availability in case of network switch failure. Additionally, the hosts are housed in both campus data centers ensuring availability in case of data center failure. The VM hosting service automatically load balances VMs between hosts, ensuring performance of hosted VMs is maintained. All types of services and applications are supported in ITS’ VM environment. It is strongly recommended that any consideration for purchasing new software or applications, consider hosting the service in a VM first, as this is the preferred method recommended by ITS. VM hosting service management will provide support of the hosting infrastructure. However, VM hosting management cannot provide guest operating system or application management or administration. VM hosting management is available to provide consulting and recommendations on how best to host your application in the VM environment. Maintenance of the VM hosting service, in general, does not require outage of hosted VMs as VMs can be relocated without loss of services to other hosts. If maintenance will require any outage of service, ITS will provide this information at least 7 days in advanced via campus listservs. If emergency maintenance is required, and depending on breadth of issue, we will inform affected groups or campus as needed. Every effort will be made to provide 24/7 availability of services. However, in the event of multiple system failures, services may be disrupted. In this event, every effort will be made to restore services as quickly as possible.
