Often HIGH-STAKES WRITING that is done under time constraints. There is no time for revision, and evaluation is done immediately after the text is written.

The SAT and GRE written exams are good examples. Summative evaluation also refers to the scoring of final drafts or portfolios when opportunity for further revision has ended.

Compare to FORMATIVE EVALUATIONSummative evaluationoccurs at the end of the writing process, when a text or project is considered complete. In contrast to FORMATIVE EVALUATION, summative evaluation treats the text as complete and evaluates it based on its current qualities, rather than evaluating based on what should be revised in the next draft. It is most common for HIGH-STAKES assignments and testing scenarios.
