Running as a standard user on your computer is a security feature that helps protect users, computers, and our network from potential threats. It also reduces the risk of accidental changes or damage to your university-managed device. Using Admin By Request should be reserved for specific tasks such as software installs or uninstalls, updates, etc.

As the name suggests, Admin By Request (ABR) provides multiple avenues for users to request the administrative access they need, when they need it. Admin by Request is installed on all university-owned, faculty/staff computers and requires users to elevate their computer to Administrative status via ABR. This platform replaces Privileges on Macs.

Requests do not require approval in most instances and for most users. See the links below to learn how to access ABR to start an admin session. 

ABR auto-installed

Admin by Request will be installed on all university-managed faculty/staff computers. If you need to find or reinstall the application for any reason, follow the appropriate instructions below.

Windows

If you need to find or reinstall the application for any reason, follow these instructions.


  1. Open Software Center.

  2. In Applications, find Admin by Request and install. 
  1. Request administrator access by following these steps. 
    1. First, click the up arrow on the taskbar’s Show hidden icons tray (1), 
    2. Then, click the green checked circle (2), 
           c. Last, click Request administrator access (3).

  2. In the administrator request pop-up, type in a reason for requesting administrator access (e.g.installing software), then click OK.

  3. Next, you will be prompted to start your administrator session. You will see a Code of Conduct pop-up, click OK.

  4. This will begin your administrator access countdown which is displayed in the bottom right corner of your screen.

  5. Click Finish to remove administrator access once your task is complete. If you forget to click finish, the time clock will run out and your device will return to standard user.

Mac

If you need to find or reinstall the application for any reason, follow these instructions.

  1. Open Self Service by clicking the Self Service icon in the dock or open applications and then click on Self Service.

  2. Once opened, sign in to Self Service using your App State credentials and search for Admin By Request in the search bar. Click the Install button to install Admin By Request on your machine.

  1. Once installed, Admin by Request will be auto-added to your dock and the Mac menu bar at the top of the screen (you can also find Admin By Request in your applications).

  2. Once opened, you will see a Code of Conduct dialog box, informing you what requesting these privileges entails. Click OK.

  3. Next, you will be prompted to start your administrator session. Click Yes to begin Administrator access which will begin a countdown.
