Introduction
Some third party apps and services connect to AsULearn using a standard called "LTI". These connections are typically set up site-wide by a member of the Academic Technologies team. Services like VoiceThread, Kaltura Video Quiz, and Google File Embed are all examples of services that connect to AsULearn using LTI. Many textbook publishers also use LTI connections to connect AsULearn to their sites and services.
In older versions of AsULearn, instructors would create an activity called "External Tool" in their course to add an LTI connection. The External Tool activity has now been transformed into a dedicated page where you can toggle connections on or off, and treats LTI connections more like dedicated activities you add into your course. This article walks through how to enable an existing LTI connection in your course.
Support
Though Academic Technologies team can set up site-wide external tool connections for use in courses, support for any external tool that is not provided directly by Academic Technologies or ITS is the responsibility of the third-party vendor.

Enabling and adding an LTI External tool connection
This is a two-part process
Adding an LTI tool connection requires you to enable the LTI tool you'd like to use, and then add it as an activity as a separate step.
After enabling an LTI tool, you need to return to your course home page, turn editing on, open the Activity Chooser, and select the LTI tool you've enabled. The LTI Tool will not be called "External Tool" in the Activity Chooser. Its name will match the name of the connection.
For example, if you enable "VitalSource Digital Materials", the name of the activity in the Activity Chooser will be "VitalSource Digital Materials".
1. Open the More menu in the Settings Bar at the top of your course, then select "LTI External Tools".
2. Locate the tool you want to enable, then click the toggle in the "Show in activity chooser" column.
- Your external tool may not be in the first page of tools. Links to additional pages are located at the bottom of the page.
- There is no save button. Changes are saved automatically.
- This process can also be used to hide external tools so they don't display in your activity chooser.
Adding your own external tool
You can also add your own external tool on this page by clicking the Add tool button. The third party provider is responsible for providing you with the credentials you'll need.
