The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (1998) states that universities, as the main internet service provider for the school, are responsible for preventing online copyright infringment among students. ASU strives to inform students of the risks of copyright infringement and illegal downloading.

The Higher Education Opportunity Act requires academic institutions to educate students on copyright and DMCA issues, Prevent inappropriate use of peer-to-peer programs and software, and suggest alternative downloading programs (Pandora, Itunes, etc.)
