Comment: Rewrote the sending steps. Replaced listserv steps with Google Groups limits link.

Attachment Size Limit

You can send messages up to 25 megabytes ( MB ) in size. If you'd like to send attachments that are larger than this, you can insert from Google Drive instead. (See directions below) You may not be able to send attachments larger attachments than 25 MB to contacts who use other email services with that have smaller attachment limits. If your attachment is too large to be sent to your contactsyou'd like to send attachments that are larger than this, you can also insert using Google Drive to get larger files to themthem from GoogleDrive.

Note: As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, Gmail doesn't allow you to send or receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe).

Sending Attachments Larger than 25MB using Google Drive

Gmail's attachment limit is 25MB, but you can insert files larger than 25mb 25MB using Google Drive. Here's how:

  1. At the bottom of the email you're writing, click the Google Drive icon to insert files from Drive.
  2. In the window that appears“Insert files using Google Drive” menu, you can upload a file to Google Drive , as well as navigate to or search for files from your device or navigate to a file you've stored in Drive. For files To send a file already stored in Driveyour drive, select the checkboxes next to the files click on the file you want to insertattach.
  3. Here, you have two options:
  • Share the file through Drive (default option). This works for files created in Drive like Google Docs or Sheets, and for other files like PDFs you've downloaded.
  • Send the file as an attachment by clicking Attachment. This only works for files that weren't created in Drive (so Google Docs, Sheets, etc. won't work)
  1. Choose the option to insert as either a Drive link (a link to your original file) or as an attachment (a copy of your file)
  2. Click insert to “insert”. Click Insert.

You can also do this on the Android Gmail app by selecting Insert from Drive from the 3-dots menu. Gmail then adds a link to your message so recipients can click the link to view your file.

Other Attachment Size Limits

Messages sent using the listserv system are under 1MB, by design of course. Maximum message size to the listserv does vary by list, and generally we try to size it based on the number of accounts in the list.Google Groups (replaced listserv system):

To view Google Groups policies and limits, see this help document: Understanding Groups policies and limitsThe ASU Staff and Faculty lists are limited to 1M. The ASU Students list is limited to 256k. Some of the smaller, specialized lists have larger limits, and can be adjusted if necessary.

Messages sent via the Announce System (announce.appstate.edu) are not allowed to contain attachments.
