Audience refers to the people who the writer or speaker is addressing. Students need to keep in mind that the audience for a text they’re creating is not necessarily only themselves and/or their instructor. Often in academic settings, the intended audience can feel constructed or fabricated, but it is assigned as practice for future professional communication purposes. Understanding one’s audience is key to determining your rhetorical situation and communicating effectively.
