Invention (often called prewriting) is the first step in the writing process. A writer generates ideas to write about to avoid staring at a blank page. This will vary from person to person, depending on how a person creates. Reading and researching are invention techniques, as are annotating, listing, outlining, freewriting, mapping, and talking about a topic.
